Our feet, made up of dozens of bones and muscles, are the carriers of our bodies, yet they are neglected. This is because we don’t take proper care of our feet until we experience any aches or pains. According to a study, only 45% of adults have fully healthy feet. This means that 55 out of 100 people have problem with their feet. Women make up the majority of those who have problem with their feet. It is stated that women complain about their feet more than men due to both the shoes they wear and their anatomical structure. Founder of Dr.Mugrabi Clinic, Foot and Ankle Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Selim Muğrabi divides foot disorders into 3: bunion, heel pain (heel spur) and athlete’s foot.
Pointed Toe Shoe Factor
The most common foot problems in women are bunion and heel pain. Op. Dr. Muğrabi says, “One of the most important factors in both problems is the high-heeled and pointed shoes. Women are inviting heel pain, bunion, knee and low back problems by wearing shoes with high heels and pointed toes.”. Stating that there have been serious developments in the surgical treatment of Hallux Valgus, i.e., bunion, in recent years, Muğrabi says, “Technological developments and changes in the surgical techniques play an important role in improving the postoperative comfort of patients.” It is stated that today, problems such as postoperative plaster cast, the need for very long rest, and intense pain after surgery have been eliminated. Patients can immediately step on the floor with their shoes after surgery and return to work after about 3 weeks. The ankle block applied in surgeries eliminates postoperative pain.
It Occurs in 1 of Every 3 Women
Heel pain occurs in about 1 out of 3 women. Its prevalence among men is around 10%. In this problem, the patient feels stinging and discomfort under the foot in the first 3-4 steps after getting out of bed in the morning after a night’s sleep or after sitting for a long time. In the later stages of the disease, this pain gets worse and can also occur while walking during the day.
Pay Attention to These When Buying Shoes
- Each time you buy a new model of shoes, you should try them on.
- Choose shoes that fit the shape of your foot as closely as possible.
- Keep in mind that the size of your feet may change as you get older.
- Have both of your feet measured. Since many people have one of their feet bigger than the other, try the shoes on your larger foot.
- Try the shoes on at the end of the day.
- Stand up while wearing them. Make sure that there is enough space for your longest toe at the end of each shoe.
- Make sure that your metatarsal bone fits well in the widest part of the shoe.
Both Flatfoot and High Arches are Signs of Foot Problems
Heel pain can develop in people with flat feet, high arches, some rheumatic diseases, obesity, those who do sports wearing the wrong shoes, those who like to walk barefoot for a long time or dance, and those who wear high-heeled shoes. In treatment, firstly, personalized insoles are recommended. With exercises, it is aimed to lengthen the tendon under the foot. The ‘night splint’ used in persistent cases plays an important role in relieving the pain. In addition to home exercises, patients start physical therapy programs and additional programs are applied to lengthen the shortened tendon. In patients with persistent pain, sound wave applications and injections come into play. In the last stage, in very persistent cases, the problem can be corrected surgically.
1 out of every 2 people in the society has foot problems. This is because we make mistakes and neglect our foot health. Some of the most common problems are bunion, heel pain and athlete’s foot.
What Should People Wearing High Heeled Shoes Pay Attention To
- There is no harm in wearing high heels for 2-3 hours at an event or meeting as long as they suit your foot structure.
- Prolonged use of high heels leads to an increase in the load on the back of the foot and the thumb. When this weight is put on the foot for a long period of time, the person develops thumb deformities. Putting weight on the foot for too long leads to a shortening of the back muscle of the foot (Achilles tendon) and consequently to heel pain and little toe deformities.
- If this period extends too long, foot function is disrupted and the weight is put on the knees and lower back, triggering problems in these areas.
Don’t Let Nail Fungus Be Your Nightmare
Op. Dr. Selim Muğrabi says, “Nail fungus, one of the biggest enemies of women’s feet, occurs in people who have to wear closed toe shoes for a long time, people with sweaty feet problems and nail trauma, and people with chronic problems such as diabetes. Patients typically experience nail discoloration, nail thickening and ingrown toenails. In traditional treatment, patients are offered oral medication. Since side effects occur in the liver and kidneys during the use of these medications, early discontinuation of the medication is the biggest problem encountered in this treatment.” Muğrabi states that, they have seen that the treatment of toenail fungus is carried out using laser, that this method has no side effects, and that in addition to this treatment, performing foot care once a month and using local medications almost guarantee satisfactory results.
