Hallux Rigidus
Hallux rigidus or great toe arthritis usually presents with great toe joint range of motion in patients. Limitation of joint movement in the great toe creates a complaint according to the shoes worn by the patient during walking. Especially when wearing sharp, narrow shoes or wearing hard shoes, the limitation of movement in the great toe causes pain more specifically.
One of the biggest problems in the great-toe arthritis or hallux rigidus, apart from the limitation of movement and pain, is the protrusion in the great toe. Due to this protrusion on the top of the foot, patients apply to the doctor with complaints of getting stuck in the foot while wearing shoes, and redness on this protrusion.
Symptoms
- We see the causes of cartilage loss among the factors that cause hallux rigidus or great-toe arthritis in patients.
- Various rheumatic diseases, especially gout, having a previous trauma to the first finger, and having a familial history of the first finger are among the known common causes.
Treatments
In the treatment of patients, firstly, shoe modifications and special insoles used for the patients are tried to eliminate the complaints. We resort to surgical treatment in patients who do not benefit from these treatments.
There are two types of surgery as the main idea in surgical treatment.
- Joint debridement is performed in the first operation. In this surgery, as a novelty, the patient’s great toe is cleaned of the remaining tissues from the cartilage formed to ensure its range of motion.
- The second operation is the fusion of the great toe joint. After this surgery, the great-toe movement is turned off in patients. the great-toe becomes immovable. However, the patients will have no pain and thanks to the given position, they will not have any problems with walking.
