With the right choice of shoes and foot care, it is possible to prevent the damage to our feet and even wear high heels.
In winter, we may have tired our feet a little while running from meeting to meeting while wearing closed shoes and high heels. However, we should always take care of our feet that carry the load of our body. With the arrival of spring in the following months, our feet, which will switch to flat and open-toe shoes, may suddenly be exposed to pain because its arch is no longer supported.
Founder of Dr. Mugrabi Clinic, Foot and Ankle Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Selim Muğrabi says that the way to overcome this situation is to wear slippers and shoes that provide support. Even if the shoe is an open toe, he finds wedge shoes to be healthier. He says that waist problems occur more often in summer when these types of shoes are not preferred. Because walking while wearing flat shoes makes the waist uncomfortable.
Choosing the Right Shoe
Your shoe size may vary depending on the shoe model. Each time you buy a new model of shoes, you should try them on. Choose the shoe that is most suitable for the shape of your foot. The size of your feet may change as you get older. Have both of your feet measured. Many people have one foot larger than the other.
Try the shoes on your larger foot. When trying on shoes, try them on at the end of the day when your feet are at their largest. When trying on shoes, stand up and check if there is enough space for your longest toe. Make sure that your metatarsal bone fits well in the widest part of the shoe. Do not neglect your daily and weekly foot care.
Beware of These Problems!
Achilles Tendon: If you feel a lump in that area, you can apply ice on it and place heel support on your shoes. If your Achilles pain does not disappear in 3-4 weeks, you should see an orthopedist. If the pain is sharp and sudden, your Achilles tendon may be torn. This sharp pain will prevent you from running, so you should rest until the pain goes away.
Heel Pain: It occurs when the body weight is on the heel. First you need to apply ice to the area. You can fill a small bottle of water, put it on the floor and roll it using the bottom of your foot for 20 minutes. If there is swelling on the heel or on the bottom of your foot, you should consult a doctor.
Permission up to 3 Hours a Day for High Heels
Bunion and heel pain are the most common foot disorders seen in women. Dr. Muğrabi says that the high heel and pointed shoes are the most important factors in both problems. So, what should be done? In fact, by wearing high heels and pointed shoes, we invite heel pain, bunion, knee and lower back problems. But should we never wear these attractive high heels?
Dr. Muğrabi says that there is no harm in wearing high heels for 2-3 hours at an event or meeting as long as they suit your foot structure. However, it should not be forgotten that when the duration of wearing high heels is prolonged, the load on the back of the foot and the thumb increases.
When exposed to this load for a long time, the shape of the thumb changes. In addition, it is best not to force the feet too much, as it will lead to shortening of the back muscle of the foot (Achilles tendon) and the formation of heel pain and small toe deformities. The deformity that occurs in the joint of the big toe and metatarsal bone is called “Hallux Valgus”. The cause of this condition is a defect in the patient’s stepping.
Pointed toe and high heel shoes trigger bunion. And unfortunately, the main treatment for this is surgical intervention. Although personalized insoles, silicone to spacers, night splints are intended to relieve complaints, they do not have therapeutic properties.
According to a study, only 45% of adults have fully healthy feet. In other words, 55% of us have problems with our foot health! Moreover, as you can guess, women make up the majority of this rate. Women have more foot problems due to both narrow shoes they wear and their anatomical structures. Dr. Muğrabi underlines that you should definitely consult a specialist when you feel aches and pains in your feet.
